state of the game

Hey, Pinecones. Trace here, making this post after a lot of deliberation and with a heavy heart. We as a mod team have always done our best to be open and transparent with our playerbase, so we're bringing this to you despite not yet having a solid game plan or solution.

The problem: The mod team that we've had over the last couple of months have, despite their best efforts, not had the time or energy available to devote to the actual running of a game. While we had more than enough manpower to maintain pages, I've been soloing anything and everything plot-related for lack of any other teammates who felt equipped or comfortable handling that high-pressure task. For a while, this was difficult but ultimately sustainable, but the sheer quantity of work involved in turning over to Arc II largely by myself finally burnt me out altogether.

I can't keep doing this. I knew that I wouldn't be able to keep doing this when I put out a call for mod volunteers for the third month in a row, but unfortunately, the volunteers we received would only be able to do the same sort of work my current co-mods are able to do, and not the kind of work necessary to take the brunt of the game's weight off of me a little.

The solution(s): I don't know. Realistically, I can see a couple of possibilities.

The first possibility is that I hand the game over to volunteers in full. I'm not sure which of the team would stay on if this were the case — I know Mel is on her way out too, for similar reasons. I'd give you everything I have re: the future of this game, all plot ideas, all spoilers and world-building.

Frankly, this option isn't likely to succeed for a number of reasons. For one, any volunteers to run the game likely would have similarly volunteered to help run it over the last few months of urgent requests for co-mod volunteers, so I'm not terribly confident that anyone will step forward on this. Secondly, in the name of transparency: We may have already lost too much momentum for the game to recover. A large percentage of our playerbase has already bowed out, and a new mod team would need to troubleshoot how to pull out of this particular nose-dive or they'd just be flying this plane straight into the ground.

That being said, this game means a lot to quite a few people and I don't want to up and close the game down without doing what I can to work through a solution first.

The second possibility is to close down the game. This is not something I suggest lightly, but I've been fighting the necessity of this option for months now and the alternatives keep falling through.

This shut-down wouldn't necessarily have to be permanent. I just need a break, just a couple of months to reclaim some semblance of a healthy mental state, and if I were able to gather a sufficient mod team in that amount of time to run the game smoothly with the heavy lifting able to be divided equally between two or more mods, we could potentially reopen sometime this fall. This is not a for-sure by any means, and it's not something I'll actively pursue unless I feel like I'm in a place where I can take on this kind of responsibility again.

The third possibility is not one I'm very thrilled with, but it's only fair that I present it: The game could turn into a musebox, where characters are able to play within the setting unsupervised. This is not ideal, simply because it would be impossible to maintain any semblance of the current world-building progression we've set into place. Players would essentially be 'winging it' plot-wise from here on out, making up what exists outside of the fence and NPCing the town for themselves. Not an ideal outcome for such a plot-heavy game, but a possibility if this is what the majority of players would prefer.

I'm also open to discuss any possibilities not mentioned here! This isn't an official vote of any kind, but rather, a way to discuss with our core playerbase what the best possible outcome might be for the game as a whole.

Go ahead and leave your feedback here or in the relevant Plurk. And from the bottom of my heart, I'm so sorry for all of this.

( arc ii ) two important polls!

officialnotice: (Default)
[personal profile] officialnotice
[community profile] intothepines
Hey there, Pinecones! A quick but important modpost for y'all.

We'd like to draw your attention to this important poll. It's just two short questions, but we'd really appreciate if you answer them for us!

For the first question: ("Is your character, overall, willing to attempt to cooperate with Ortech moving forward?")
Please vote once for each character you play. We'd like to know how the population skews on an IC level, and if you just vote once for your entire roster, three characters who would cooperate are weighted the same as one who would not (or vice versa).

As a note, 'cooperation' in this case can be willing or grudging. Anything short of actively working against them counts as 'cooperation' for the purposes of this poll.

For the second question: ("What themes or concepts are you most excited to experience in Arc II?")
Please vote just once in total, regardless of how many characters you happen to play. (To do so, just submit without clicking any check-boxes while voting each time after your first.) This question is polling you, as players, regarding exactly what sort of content the playerbase is most strongly anticipating going forward, and voting once for each character you play would give this an unfair skew.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for Arc II's pages and introductory Newsletter coming up on the 3rd. We hope you're as excited as we are!

Hello, dearest Pinecones, and welcome to our May event! This month's happening is a little more... psychological than investigatory, but it should still provide plenty for characters to think about and discuss nervously amongst themselves in the relative 'privacy' of their own homes. Enjoy the reprieve, citizens of Wayward Pines, because after this it's about to get a lot more dangerous in our sleepy little town.

( mod announcement ) adjustment to crime & deaths mechanic

officialnotice: (Default)
[personal profile] officialnotice
[community profile] intothepines
Hello, Pinecones!

While most of our monthly announcements will roll out in the May Newsletter on the 3rd, we have one we'd like to get out in the open a little early to clear up a matter of lingering confusion.

The game was initially shaped almost entirely around the source material — the Wayward Pines books by Blake Crouch. The places in which the game deviated from the source were few and far between, mostly adjustments made to make the concept more 'playable' as a DWRP or to fill in blanks that the source material failed to answer.

As the months have progressed, we've come to realize that the game has taken on a direction of its own. This is absolutely a good thing — we love what the game is evolving into, more and more as each month goes by — but it has led us to the conclusion that some of the aspects of source canon which we initially planned on featuring in our game just no longer fit with the tone that has been established in The Pines or the momentum we hope for going forward.

As such, we've decided to remove the fete mechanic from play. From the start, we've had a less-than-clear process for initiating a fete, and our reluctance to make it a frequent facet of gameplay here in The Pines should have been a sign that it was an aspect of the game that we needed to rethink.

How will this change the game as you know it? Honestly, not much. There's nothing we've done or released deets about so far that needs to be retconned based on this change. There are still very strong consequences for those who choose to subvert the most fundamental rules of Wayward Pines, they just no longer involve being hunted down by your friends and neighbors.

We've adjusted the FAQ to reflect this change. Additionally, we've replaced what would have been the Deaths page with a Crime & Punishment page, complete with a spreadsheet to keep track of who has and hasn't gotten in trouble. This hopefully clears up a lot of the questions surrounding rule-breaking in Wayward Pines, but if not, you're welcome to drop a line on the FAQ!

A final note: We'd like to thank every single one of our players for your patience as we work through the process of making the game the best it can possibly be for you guys. You've seen us make some pretty big changes from month to month and have been nothing but supportive and encouraging, and it means a lot to us. As always, we welcome any feedback you might have over on our Mod Contact page!

Hey there, Pinecones -

In light of the delay of our April Newsletter to the 4th rather than the 1st, we wanted to give players a heads-up on where the Outbreak plot ended up so that players can know the status of their characters in time for the April intro log posted earlier this evening!

While a more thorough summary of the actual metaplot thread and how it went down will come in the Newsletter, it's safe to say that all characters who went to the hospital for assistance are now cured. The water is no longer contaminated in any way, and enough blood samples were collected for an antidote to be synthesized. By the 30th of March, that antidote was distributed amongst all patients exhibiting symptoms. Those who are still sick but have not gone to the hospital will continue to exhibit symptoms until April 5th, though they become decreasingly dire by the day.

Just wanted to give y'all an update! Keep an eye out for the Newsletter on Sunday night.

Hey there, Pinecones! It's slightly past time for March's first event write-up. This one's pretty simple, but we think you'll have fun with it.

( ! ) An important heads-up! Based on the feedback we've gotten, we'll be doing a single catch-all log for this event, as well as the storm on the 16th and the St. Patty's Day festival on the 17th. Players looking to participate in any of these happenings are welcomed to utilize the catch-alls for their threading needs.

Now, on to the event!

Hey again, Pinecones! We hope everyone's having fun so far. Now it's time for our first event post!

Typically, the schedule will go a bit differently. At the start of the month, a post will go up which outlines the coming month in a passable amount of detail so that players have an overview of what's to come. Then, event posts will go up 5 to 7 days before each event detailing the event in full, with a mod Q&A and general plotting occurring in the comments. Because we didn't have the start-of-the-month overarching post, this post will cover both of February's main goings-ons.

All in all, this month is a bit of an introductory settling-in month all across the board, with actual metaplot-related happenings beginning to unfold in March.

Now on to the events!
