( mod announcement ) adjustment to crime & deaths mechanic
Hello, Pinecones!
While most of our monthly announcements will roll out in the May Newsletter on the 3rd, we have one we'd like to get out in the open a little early to clear up a matter of lingering confusion.
The game was initially shaped almost entirely around the source material — the Wayward Pines books by Blake Crouch. The places in which the game deviated from the source were few and far between, mostly adjustments made to make the concept more 'playable' as a DWRP or to fill in blanks that the source material failed to answer.
As the months have progressed, we've come to realize that the game has taken on a direction of its own. This is absolutely a good thing — we love what the game is evolving into, more and more as each month goes by — but it has led us to the conclusion that some of the aspects of source canon which we initially planned on featuring in our game just no longer fit with the tone that has been established in The Pines or the momentum we hope for going forward.
As such, we've decided to remove the fete mechanic from play. From the start, we've had a less-than-clear process for initiating a fete, and our reluctance to make it a frequent facet of gameplay here in The Pines should have been a sign that it was an aspect of the game that we needed to rethink.
How will this change the game as you know it? Honestly, not much. There's nothing we've done or released deets about so far that needs to be retconned based on this change. There are still very strong consequences for those who choose to subvert the most fundamental rules of Wayward Pines, they just no longer involve being hunted down by your friends and neighbors.
We've adjusted the FAQ to reflect this change. Additionally, we've replaced what would have been the Deaths page with a Crime & Punishment page, complete with a spreadsheet to keep track of who has and hasn't gotten in trouble. This hopefully clears up a lot of the questions surrounding rule-breaking in Wayward Pines, but if not, you're welcome to drop a line on the FAQ!
A final note: We'd like to thank every single one of our players for your patience as we work through the process of making the game the best it can possibly be for you guys. You've seen us make some pretty big changes from month to month and have been nothing but supportive and encouraging, and it means a lot to us. As always, we welcome any feedback you might have over on our Mod Contact page!
