( february events ) valentine's day + some shitty ass weather
Hey again, Pinecones! We hope everyone's having fun so far. Now it's time for our first event post!
Typically, the schedule will go a bit differently. At the start of the month, a post will go up which outlines the coming month in a passable amount of detail so that players have an overview of what's to come. Then, event posts will go up 5 to 7 days before each event detailing the event in full, with a mod Q&A and general plotting occurring in the comments. Because we didn't have the start-of-the-month overarching post, this post will cover both of February's main goings-ons.
All in all, this month is a bit of an introductory settling-in month all across the board, with actual metaplot-related happenings beginning to unfold in March.
Now on to the events!THE DRINKS ARE ON US
CR EVENT: Valentine's Day
EVENT DATE: February 14th - 21st(?)
You're new. You're confused. After a run-around from the hospital and sheriff, you've finally gotten... well, most of your stuff. Your memories are finally coming back, but that in itself is a double-edged sword - the more you remember about the distant (or not-so-distant) world you call 'home', the more most of you also remember about a cozy little home right here in Wayward Pines.
You could probably use a friend right about now. A shoulder to lean on, maybe even cry on, mumbling indistinctly about places you aren't allowed to use proper nouns to speak of.
Conveniently enough, someone else seems to have had that same idea.IN-CHARACTER IT ALL STARTS WITH A NOTE
Starting as early as 6 AM on the morning of February 14th, many residents will find a tidy little envelope taped carefully to their door with a thin layer of heart-patterned washi tape. The envelope bears no address or sender, only your name.
Within the envelope is a note and possibly some form of ticket or voucher. The precise contents vary from person to person, but the gist is the same: Some form of meal or activity has been pre-paid in your honor and awaits you on a specified day and time this week that doesn't conflict with any work schedule you may or may not have. The catch is, another person will be joining you - someone you may or may not know, but who is just as new as you are. It's simply signed, Wayward Pines.
The note is written as if to appeal to you personally, casual but with that dry sense of humor you get such a kick out of, and the activity in question seems like a pretty good time.
You might actually want to check it out. What harm could it do?OUT OF CHARACTER SO YOU WANT IN?
Here's how this will go from a player's perspective:
STEP 1: Sign up on this post! There will be a top-level comment for sign-ups with a neato little textbox form to fill out. It asks you which character(s) you're signing up, a little bit of identifying info about them, and any urgent preferences you might have.
( ! ) Note that sign-ups will close on Saturday the 11th (12:01 AM) to allow for time to plot once partners have been selected!
STEP 2: Each character will be paired with another character via RNG. This is the character your character's being fixed up with for the event.
STEP 3: In the remaining three days before the event begins, get together with your character's partner and figure out the details of your character's "date".
Your character's partner is the only part of the event that we, as mods, are choosing for you. Players get to decide what kind of 'date' they've been fixed up on, as well as what their character's note reads. Keep in mind:
- The activity is designed to be something both parties will enjoy. With your partner, think about what they have in common that would make a decent shared activity for them! (Keep in mind that all dates are scheduled to take place before the 21st.)
- The note is written in a way that would be personally persuasive to your character. For example, one could be something like, "We know you're new and don't know a ton of people, so we thought we'd help! here's a free ticket to a movie with what's hopefully a new friend." If your character would find any note at all 'suspicious', it can simply be a free movie ticket with the date and time and a voucher for free snacks. Alternatively, it can be a key to a hotel room with a note that says, "In case you're hard up."
Not all options are exclusively romantic. If you want it to be presented to your characters (or even just one side of the pair) as a date, go for it. If you want it to be presented as a fun friend-making activity, that's great too. Though the theme is 'Valentine's Day', the exact nature of your characters' outings are entirely up to you as players!
It doesn't have to go as planned. There's no behavioral compulsion, no punishment for not attending, nothing. Characters can totally disregard it, can trade dates with a friend, can show up and be like "nope I'm out", can go on the date utterly platonically and actually make a friend with zero flirting whatsoever, etc. Whatever happens, happens.SNOW AS FUCK
WEATHER EVENT: Snow
EVENT DATE: February 21st - 26th
Basically? This first month is chill in both the figurative and literal senses, as shown by the definite quantity of snow falling on our lovely mountain suburb. Like three feet of snow - not a blizzard and not enough pile-up to put anyone in much actual danger, but it sure in an inconvenience.
Though a dusting of snow sprinkled the sidewalks and lawns when characters first arrived, it soon melted away, and locals have been heard chatting about an early end to the cold season this year.
This, as it turns out, is very very wrong. In the wee hours of morning on February 21st, a flurry of snow begins to fall. By mid-day, the town's been whited-out almost entirely. Characters probably want to find somewhere warm to be and stay there, because by night, the snow's a foot and a half deep - and it's not letting up yet.
The morning of the 22nd brings a grand total of 40 inches of snow. It lingers for the next few days, deeper in drifts against buildings and shallower in the thus-far-unplowed streets. A note on seldom-used Channel 0 tells everyone to stay inside and stay warm, promising to make the streets accessible as soon as necessary repairs are made to the snow plows, and reassuring residents that until the snow clears, 911 is more than willing to connect you with an electrician in the event of heating system failure in your home. (Which, for the record, is definitely a thing that can happen to your characters. These homes seem a bit on the older side, and this kind of weather is pretty unusual. If your character calls in for repairs, the electrician can make his or her way to them in about six hours.)
Mid-day on the 26th, when the snow has melted down to about 2 1/2 feet deep on average, a snow plow finally makes its rumbling way down Main Street and the residential roads, clearing up access to the roads at the very least, and life begins to get back to normal. The snow itself, unfortunately, will take a couple of weeks at least to properly melt.
